The Nevada Youth Ski Education Foundation is proud to announce our friendship and professional connection with Dr. Naomi Albertson at the Reno Orthopedic Clinic. We would like to extend her knowledge and expertise onto you by making her contact information available, and by bringing you concussion prevention and treatment awareness information. Dr. Albertson is a family medicine and sports medicine medical doctor. She specializes in injury prevention, counselling for achieving peak sports performance, non-operative management of musculoskeletal injuries, concussion, and osteoporosis management. Here are a few words from Naomi:
“Concussions can occur in any sport or physical activity, but of course, some sports have a higher risk than others. Unfortunately, as the limits of speed and the intensity of athletics continues to increase, the potential for concussion (classified as a mild traumatic brain injury, or TBI) also increases.
When injury occurs, the athlete will not be permitted to return to play until they have recovered and been examined by a physician. Fortunately, with proper management and care taken before return to participation, the ability to protect the long-term health of athletes is now more effective than ever. Having a dedicated team and an organized system to approach and care for young athletes is critical to managing symptoms and understanding clear return to play (and return to academic) decisions.
Nearly all professional and elite level athletes use imPACT testing as part of the evaluation for their head injuries. ImPACT is a neuro-psychologic test that is web-based and easy to administer. ImPACT is the industry leader in concussion evaluation and is trusted by teams and organizations around the world.
Here in Reno, imPACT has been used by the high schools and University. However, many of the organized youth leagues and youth teams have not had access to this type of testing or follow up… But we do now! Dr. Naomi Albertson, a sports medicine physician with Reno Orthopedic Clinic, is a Credentialed ImPACT Consultant (CIC) who has developed a team to care for our young athletes. She is able to help at a local level with return to play decisions, and she is most interested in working with the athlete’s primary doctor.”
